WHAT IS SIGOL?

The Special Interest Group for Online Learning (SIGOL) provides a forum for online learning, blended learning, mobile learning devices, web 2.0 tools, course management systems and other instructional tools and strategies for teaching and learning online. The SIGOL community includes members with various levels of expertise on these  topics.

SIGOL Sessions at MACUL 2013:

We are thrilled to host the following sessions for MACUL 2013!

SIGOL 1: Building Community in a Hybrid/Online Environment

8:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Cobo Center

Sean Williams, Instructional Technologist and Ed Tech Evangelist, CUE

Learning is social but how do you create that online? Online learning is so much more than a correspondence course. Today's learners crave a social component. In this session we will look at the pedagogy behind and tools to be used to create community and interaction in an online or hybrid learning setting.

SIGOL 2: Student Success Strategies

1:00 - 4:30 PM:  Cobo Center

Sean Williams, Instructional Technologist and Ed Tech Evangelist, CUE

Online learning is something different altogether from either a teacher or student perspective. In this session we will look at the strategies students (and teachers) need to make a successful transition to an online or hybrid classroom as well as what that looks like and how to explicitly teach these requisite skills.

Here is a great article on “Massive Open Online Courses,” or MOOCs, free university-level non-credit courses, and their implications for traditional monetization models at the universities (including the University of Michigan) offering these courses via Coursera.
